Offering of letters aims to fight hunger
The Farm Bill is one of our nation’s most important pieces of legislation. It is especially vital to the work of attempting to end hunger, both in our country and around the world.
So far, a new Farm Bill has not been officially signed and the old one was extended for a short time and is about to expire. It is imperative that we urge our lawmakers to craft and sign a new Farm Bill that builds healthy, fair and sustainable food systems.
Some members of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Mount Prospect will be writing letters to various legislators urging them to consider a Farm Bill that will:
• Support anti-hunger and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
• Protect international food programs and build in flexibility to use appropriate tools when serving people in need.
• Include provisions supporting the livelihood of farmworkers, food workers and new farmers.
• Promote reducing food waste and encourage food donation at the farm level.
• Support programs that protect the environment, addresses climate change and offers incentives to climate friendly agricultural practices.
Our “Offering of Letters” will take place on Sunday, Sept. 15, as part of our service project called, “Gods Work, Our Hands.” Anyone in the community is invited to join us in this endeavor.
