New event for Des Plaines Ikes — a Fish Boil Sept. 28

There’s exciting news coming from the Des Plaines Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America.

The chapter will hold its first Fish Boil from 4-9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at its meeting location, 1841 S. River Road, in Des Plaines. Des Plaines’s own Don’s Dock will be doing the cooking.

Long time member John “Jake” Jacobson has championed the idea for the club, referring to the popularity of fish boils in Wisconsin. It’s a perfect marriage of many Ikes’ passion for fishing and their enthusiasm for providing get-togethers for the community.

Traditionally the fish boil consists of delicious whitefish steaks, potatoes, onions and often corn, boiled up and served with drawn butter, accompanied by coleslaw and rolls. Everyone is eager to see what Don’s Dock will put together. The afternoon will also include the opportunity to visit and spend time on the beautiful grounds surrounding the Ikes.

Tickets are available for sale online at www.iwla-desplaines.org (look under ‘Events’), by asking a member, or by calling (847) 824-4509.

Housed at the historic Jefferson House since 1929, the Ikes (as the league is affectionately known) like to share their interests in conservation, ecology and air, water, land and wildlife preservation with others. This local chapter will soon be celebrating its 100th birthday, as it was established in 1926.

Those interested in learning more about the club’s work are welcome to attend any business meeting, held the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the club’s meeting place, 1841 S. River Road, Des Plaines.
