Yes, we need actions that honor Vietnam vets

I was pleased to read the Daily Herald’s editorial “ Remembering the Vietnam Generation,” July 10, regarding Maine West High School recently restoring a plaque honoring former students who died in the Vietnam War to a prominent position in the school’s Warrior Room.

Like those members of the Class of 1974 who noticed the absence of the plaque while touring Maine West ahead of their 50th reunion, I believe it is critical to remember our Vietnam veterans for their heroism and sacrifice. It’s the reason I introduced a bill to rename the St. Charles East Side Station Post Office as the Veterans of the Vietnam War Memorial Post Office, which was signed into law by President Biden on May 7.

Renaming that post office was a small gesture to honor our veterans and remind our community of the sacrifices made by those men and women to safeguard the freedoms we enjoy today.

I am glad that both Maine West High School and the Daily Herald recognize the importance of continuing to honor their service and sacrifice.
