Proposal dangerous to health, environment
Wheeling needs to review t he potential environmental and health impacts to residents before moving forward with the proposed Gas N Wash project at Hintz and Buffalo Grove Road forward. This large gas dispersing facility will have 54, 000 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel storage with 20 pumps serving commercial trucks and cars located next to a residential area with apartments, condominiums and homes.
The release of volatile organic compounds that are hazardous air pollutants will occur from both the vehicles entering the facility and also from the facility emission sources of, loading, breathing, fueling, spillage and hose permeation to evaporation. Hazardous components of gasoline include, benzene, ethyl benzene, hexane, naphthalene, propylene, toluene and xylenes.
These chemicals are known to have serious health effects including cancer and other health impacts on target organs. Benzene is a known cancer-causing chemical. The concentration, dose and exposure time are key to the toxicology risk associated with chemicals. Living near this large gas dispensing facility may increase the concentration and exposure to benzene and the other hazardous chemicals.
Large gas dispensing facilities like this should not be located to residential areas where exposure may be continuous for residents and in particular to the sensitive groups of children and elderly.
