Mosquito with West Nile virus found in Hoffman Estates
A sample of mosquitoes in Hoffman Estates has tested positive for West Nile virus, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced.
The specimen in Hoffman Estates was collected May 14 by the Northwest Mosquito Abatement District. It and a sample in downstate Morgan County were the first two batches to test positive for the virus this year, according to a news release.
To prevent infection, people should wear insect repellent outside and eliminate standing water at their homes, health officials said.
Common symptoms of West Nile virus include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks.
Most people infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms. In rare cases, severe illness or death can occur.
People older than 60 and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus.
