Comparison shows trend of debt going up

In his letter printed in Your Views on Jan. 31, James Prescott said, "The national debt has been on a steady downward trend (as is unemployment) for the last six years."

However, a quick search in Google shows the national debt was at $10.0 trillion on Sept. 30, 2008, the year just before President Obama took office. At Sept. 30, 2014, the national debt was $17.8 trillion following six years of a steady upward trend.
