Republicans cancel fundraiser following Democratic complaint
MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Assembly Republicans have canceled a fundraiser after Democrats complained that holding it would violate the Legislature's rules.
Melanie Hubbard, a spokeswoman for the Republican Assembly Campaign Committee, says that the event Wednesday night at a hotel in downtown Madison was canceled "due to an unfortunate scheduling oversight."
Assembly rules prohibit lawmakers from participating in fundraisers during floor periods. The Assembly's current floor period began Tuesday and is scheduled to run through Jan. 29.
Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate had protested earlier Wednesday, saying the planned "speed networking" event was in violation of the rules.
