Gurnee police Explorer members wanted
Gurnee police will host an annual Explorer orientation night at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, in the police department's community room in the headquarters, O'Plaine Road and Washington Street. Officials said the police Explorer program is open to anyone ages 14 to 20. The Explorers meet Tuesday evenings at the police department and are mentored by officers in the areas of law enforcement, leadership skills, confidence, teamwork and volunteerism. Gurnee Explorers average 300 hours a year volunteering around the village of Gurnee for charities and events, in addition to participating in training with officers. Friday's orientation is mandatory for new applicants and a parent. There also will be a thorough background check, written test and interview in January.
