Community meetings to give updates on Detroit rail project

DETROIT (AP) - Residents and businesses in Detroit's Midtown and downtown areas can receive updates on construction of a $140 million light rail project.

Some lanes of Woodward Avenue along the streetcar's 6.6-mile roundtrip route are closed for work on the project.

M-1 Rail external relations director Sommer Woods says 2015 will be "an extremely busy year" for the project with "a lot of construction activities" taking place along the Woodward corridor.

The next meeting begins at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Garden Theater, 3929 Woodward Avenue. Four other meetings will be held through mid-February at other locations and will feature information on construction and detours.

The rail line is to start running in 2016. It will extend from Detroit's downtown riverfront to the city's New Center area.
