Indiana road crews prep highways ahead of icy winter storm

GREENFIELD, Ind. (AP) - The Indiana Department of Transportation is putting its entire central Indiana fleet of salt and plow trucks on the road ahead of a winter storm poised to bring an icy mix to the state.

The National Weather Service issued an ice storm warning from 4 p.m. Sunday through 7 a.m. Monday for 17 central Indiana counties along Interstate 70.

Forecasters say up to a quarter-inch of ice could cover roads, trees and power lines in that area by Monday morning, with lesser amounts north and south of the warning area.

INDOT crews are pre-treating bridges, ramps and other road surfaces on highways and interstates with brine before the mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow arrives.

The agency is urging motorists to drive with extreme caution once the storm arrives.
