7 Indiana legal aid groups get money from bank settlement

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indiana Bar Foundation says several civil legal aid and pro bono nonprofits around the state will share $1.4 million in grants during the coming year.

Almost half of the money - $585,000 - is coming from a national settlement entered into by the U.S. Department of Justice, various states Attorneys General and Bank of America. Indiana Legal Services offices statewide will share $275,000, and the Indianapolis Legal Aid Society in partnership with Indiana Landmarks will receive $230,000. Smaller amounts are going to five regional legal aid groups.

Twelve pro bono nonprofits around the state funded by the Bar Foundation will share $800,000 in annual grants. Pro bono legal representation is provided free of charge to clients.
