Geneva police set for 2.25 percent raise, first of a 4-year deal

Geneva police patrol officers will receive pay increases of 2.25 percent this year, but give up some pay for major holidays, under the terms of a contract the city council will vote on Monday.

Members of the Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council have ratified the agreement, according to a city council memo.

If the council approves it, the four-year contract would take effect May 1.

Pay would be increased 2.25 percent the first year, 2.5 percent each of the second and third years, and 2.75 percent in the fourth year.

Starting pay, for an officer with no experience, is $61,762 in the first year of the contract.

The contract cuts the number of major holidays for which officers who work them are paid 2.5 times their normal hourly rate. They now get such pay for six holidays.

Presently they receive that pay for working Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Memorial Day and Independence Day.

They will still receive double time for working the rest of the holidays. The contract lists 11 holidays total.

In the first year of the contract, the holidays are Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. After that, only Christmas Day work is eligible for extra pay.

The $150 clothing allowance for detectives was removed. But the annual uniform allowance is being increased from $525 to $600 in the first year of the contract, and will increase $50 each of the remaining years.

The contract covers 26 patrol officers.
