A look at selected mayoral races across Indiana:
- Indianapolis: Democrat Joe Hogsett, the city's former U.S. attorney, defeated Republican candidate Chuck Brewer, a restaurant owner. Hogsett will succeed two-term Republican Mayor Greg Ballard, who didn't seeking re-election.
- Fort Wayne: Democratic Mayor Tom Henry won a third term over Republican Mitch Harper, a City Council member and former state legislator. Henry was backed by business groups for a third term in the typically Republican-leaning city.
- South Bend: Democratic Mayor Pete Buttigieg, facing voters for the first time since he came out as gay in June, easily defeated Republican Kelly Jones, a little-known jewelry maker.
- Evansville: Republican Mayor Lloyd Winnecke was elected to a second term over Democratic state. Rep. Gail Riecken.
- Carmel: Republican Mayor James Brainard, who was first elected in 1995, was unopposed for a sixth term. Brainard gained attention this summer with his successful push to add sexual orientation and gender identity to Carmel's anti-discrimination ordinance following the uproar over the state's religious objections law.
- Bloomington: Democrat John Hamilton, who was a top aide to former Gov. Frank O'Bannon, defeated Republican John Turnbull, a city parks department manager. Three-term Democratic Mayor Mark Kruzan didn't seek re-election.
- Terre Haute: Republican Mayor Duke Bennett narrowly won a third term against Democrat Mark Bird, a Vigo County Council member and the older brother of Basketball Hall of Famer Larry Bird. The two clashed over Bennett's financial leadership of the city, which has a multimillion-dollar general fund deficit.
- Anderson: Democrat Thomas Broderick Jr., a former Madison County prosecutor, defeated Republican Mayor Kevin Smith. Smith was on the mayoral ballot for the fourth straight election, with wins in 2003 and 2011 bookending a 2007 loss.
- Kokomo: Democrat Greg Goodnight won a third term against Republican Martha Lake, the Howard County auditor.
- Elkhart: Republican challenger Tim Neese, a former Indiana House member, defeated Democratic Mayor Dick Moore's bid for a third term. Moore backed an unsuccessful attempt this summer to extend the city's anti-discrimination ordinance to include sexual orientation and gender identity. Neese said the Legislature should decide the issue statewide.
- Jasper: Election night vote counting ended with Republican Mayor Terry Seitz and Democratic challenger Wayne Schuetter tied with 1,856 votes. Voting machines were locked in the county clerk's office Tuesday night as officials sorted out what's next in trying to determine a winner.
