Chicago City Council to be without a Cullerton

For 111 of the last 143 years a Cullerton has served in the Chicago City Council.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports Alderman Tim Cullerton has told colleagues he won't run for re-election, nor will a family member replace him.

Tim Cullerton is a descendant of Edward Cullerton, an original settler of Chicago. The first Cullerton to occupy a City Council seat was saloon keeper Edward "Foxy" Cullerton, who was elected in 1871. He died in office in 1920.

Tim Cullerton's father was a longtime alderman. His sister is the 38th Ward's Democratic committeeman.

Despite Tim Cullerton's plan to step down, the Cullerton family won't be lacking in political influence.

Sen. John Cullerton is the current Illinois Senate president, and Thomas Cullerton of Villa Park serves in that body.
