Fowler agrees to one-year deal with Cubs
Just four days after acquiring him, the Cubs have agreed on a 2015 contract with center fielder Dexter Fowler.
The two sides avoided arbitration with a one-year, $9.5 million deal.
Fowler came to the Cubs Monday in a trade with the Houston Astros. The Cubs sent third baseman Luis Valbuena and pitcher Dan Straily to the Astros for Fowler, who is expected to lead off for the Cubs.
While still with the Astros, Fowler filed for $10.8 million while the team offered $8.5 million. The Cubs inherited the arbitration scenario, but it's been their practice to settle cases before hearings can take place.
Last week, the Cubs settled with all of their arb-eligible players except reliever Pedro Strop. The Cubs are offering $2 million while Strop is seeking $3 million. Hearings are in February, but the two sides have plenty of time to reach an agreement before then.
