Batavia parks' first Walk & Wag steps off Saturday

The Batavia Park District's inaugural Walk & Wag 3K-9 will be Saturday, May 30.

Many people consider their four-legged friends to be more than just pets. The Batavia Park District understands that, and in fact, a large number of district staff have their own pets they consider to be part of their family. Now the district is giving people a wonderful opportunity to commemorate the life of a beloved pet through the creation of a new Pet Memorial Program.

The district will kick off the new program at the Walk & Wag 3K-9 Saturday, May 30. The event will feature an unveiling of a bulldog statue at 10 a.m. at the Bark Park at West Main Community Park, 40W101 W. Main St., followed by a 1.8 mile fun walk throughout the park. A variety of vendors will be on-site during the event, distributing freebies and samples as well.

On-site registration will begin at 9 a.m. The cost is $5 per person over the age of 13, and $5 for each dog. The first 50 individuals or families to register will receive a complimentary "Wag Bag" stuffed full of fun giveaways, courtesy of sponsors DePaw University, Batavia Animal Clinic and Passionate Petsitters. Each dog registered also will receive a gift courtesy of the Batavia Park District.

For more information about the event or to register, call (630) 879-5235 or visit www.bataviaparks.org.

Through the new program, individuals can purchase a granite brick, a bench or a piece of agility equipment to commemorate or celebrate the life of a beloved pet.

Engraved granite bricks provide a long-lasting tribute and will be placed around the base of the bulldog statue inside the Bark Park. The cost is $100 per brick. A memorial bench with engraved plaque adds beauty to the park and provides a useful amenity for patrons to enjoy. The cost is $1,500, which includes the bench, plaque and installation.

If you are interested in celebrating the life of your beloved pet in a unique way, the district has selected a number of agility pieces that can be purchased as well. For more information on available items and cost, call (630) 879-5235.

Staff will have information and memorial program applications on-site for anyone interested in purchasing a brick, bench, or agility equipment during the event. Cash and credit cards will be accepted. After the event, applications will be available in district facilities and online at www.bataviaparks.org.
