Endorsement: D'Astice for Rolling Meadows mayor

Two years ago when we endorsed Len Prejna for mayor, we acknowledged the internal politics and unproductive divisions that had emerged on the city council following Mayor Tom Rooney's departure.

In endorsing him, we said Prejna was "the candidate with the best chance of getting the council to pull in one direction." Unfortunately, Prejna has been unsuccessful as mayor in doing that. Let's be clear. We think Prejna is a good man and a thoughtful public servant. But the reality is, his reserved, almost submissive style has not been effective in reining in the jockeying that seems now to occupy so much of the council's deliberations.

In this election, we endorse 6th Ward Alderman John D'Astice who combines a long record of service and an analytical mind with strong leadership attributes. D'Astice has a clear vision for the city's future and the necessary experience, forcefulness and collaborative skill to get the council working together on Rolling Meadows' behalf.

Two other candidates are running.

Fourth Ward Alderman Joe Gallo brims with energy and charisma and we're attracted to his call to break out of old traditions. But he tends to articulate his vision pedantically rather than with clarity, and more troubling given the council's lack of teamwork, he seems to be a lightning rod for division rather than cohesion.

Planning and Zoning Commission Vice Chairman Dave Whitney has contributed to the city for two decades on the zoning board and that experience, in addition to an impressive array of other civic involvement, provides him with strong credentials. He is thoughtful, knowledgeable and more than willing to offer his time. He's an asset to the community. But we believe D'Astice is the best choice.
