2 Aurora teens killed when SUV strikes semi in intersection

ROCHELLE, Ill. (AP) - Two teenagers are dead after the SUV they were riding in slammed into a semi-truck in a fog-shrouded intersection in northern Illinois.

Illinois State Police say the crash happened just before 6 p.m. Tuesday near Rochelle, about 25 miles south of Rockford.

Police say six students from Aurora's Central Catholic High School were traveling to a regional basketball game at Rochelle High School, when their 17-year-old driver ran a red light. The SUV struck the truck, which was turning.

A 16-year-old boy riding in the front seat was pronounced dead at the scene. A 16-year-old girl was pronounced dead at Rochelle Hospital.

Police say the driver was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries. Three other passengers were released after signing medical waivers.

The truck driver was not injured.
