Huntingburg-based coal mining company to cut 138 jobs

HUNTINGBURG, Ind. (AP) - A southwestern Indiana-based mining company says it will eliminate as many as 138 jobs as it reduces its workforce at all of its facilities.

Huntingburg-based United Minerals wrote in a letter to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development that the layoffs are expected to occur between Dec. 31 and Jan. 13.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports (http://bit.ly/1imRyYr ) the company's operations include offices in Huntingburg; a mine, offices and a wash plant in Lynnville; other mines in Oakland City, Elberfeld and Boonville; a dock facility in Newburgh; and a river terminal in Evansville.

United Minerals blames the job cuts on a reduction in coal sales and demand for coal that's expected to decline.
