Dawn Patrol: Quick hits as you head out the door

<h3 class="briefHead">Breaking news</h3>

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is expected to release her full Cook County budget today. It's expected to feature about $25 million in new taxes, including an increase in taxes on alcohol, tobacco, cars and boats. In addition, people in unincorporated Cook County will be asked to front a $150 fee for police protection, and a $4.50 fee to pay for parking at the county's criminal court facilities.

A Huntley man has been charged with aggravated battery after stabbing a person in the abdomen with a knife. Bryan G. Strang, 37, is being held behind bars on $15,000 bond after stabbing the victim during a Huntley party early Sunday morning. Officials said the fight between Strang and the 21-year-old victim was over a girl.

<h3 class="briefHead">Abandoned baby's cries may have saved her life</h3>

Police continue to search for the mother of a newborn girl left at a Schaumburg church. A church elder at Gospel Presbyterian Church said if he had not heard the cries from a recyclable grocery bag left in the church's parking lot Sunday, the baby could have died. A woman found the bag in the parking lot and left it on a table inside the church, completely unaware of its contents. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Man charged in Bloomingdale youth football brawl</h3>

A Hanover Park man has been charged with battery after last month's fight during a youth football game in Bloomingdale. Ernest D. Lane, 41, was charged with battery after someone signed complaints against him. A brawl erupted on the field during a match between the Bloomingdale Bears and the Hanover Park Hurricanes after the last play of the game. Lane is accused of punching another man in the face and head. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Gadhafi burned at dawn</h3>

Longtime Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, his son Muatassim and a top aide were buried in an Islamic ceremony at dawn Tuesday in a secret location, with a few relatives and officials in attendance, officials said. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Gurnee to give up to $10 million to Macy's developer</h3>

Gurnee's elected officials last night endorsed spending up to $10 million in public money so a Macy's department store can be built at Gurnee Mills. Village board members agreed the cash should be borrowed through the issuance of Midwestern Disaster Area Bonds, a federal program meant to help Illinois counties that sustained flood damage in 2008. Gurnee Mills' parent company, Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group, would receive the maximum $10 million from the village to help pay for construction of the Macy's where Circuit City had operated as part of a proposed redevelopment agreement. <h3 class="briefHead">Two critically injured in Glendale Heights blaze</h3>

Glendale Heights fire officials continue to investigate an early Monday blaze that left two people in critical condition. Firefighters found an 84-year-old man and 48-year-old woman trapped inside the home on the 400 block of Fullerton Avenue shortly after midnight. Two other residents of the home escaped with minor injuries and were treated at the scene. A cause of the fire was unknown and was being jointly investigated by the Glendale Heights Police Department, Glenside Fire Protection District and DuPage County Arson Task Force. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Harper wrestler accused of breaking into home appears in court</h3>

A Harper College wrestler accused of breaking into an off-duty police officer's home last month appeared in bond court yesterday after recovering from surgeries from a gunshot wound. Prosecutors said Kerin Ramirez, 19, of Addison fought with two police veterans for about 10 minutes before one of them retrieved a gun and shot Ramirez in the stomach. "He told (the officer) to get the (expletive) out of his house," said Assistant State's Attorney Tim Diamond. Ramirez said he did not remember entering the officer's home because he was intoxicated and wanted to apologize. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Legislators claim progress to keep Sears in Hoffman Estates</h3>

A compromise to keep Sears Holding Inc. in Hoffman Estates while appeasing Community Unit District 300 is in the works. Legislators said they are working on a deal that would extend the company's existent tax break and that would penalize Sears if the company leaves. The penalty would send more money to District 300. "Everyone's going to benefit, and everyone's going to share in the pain," said Republican state Sen. Pam Althoff. Sears executives say they will decide by the end of the year whether to leave the state. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Residents question Millburn Strangler bypass</h3>

County administrators have been trying to untangle a notorious traffic snag in north central Lake County known as the Millburn Strangler, but now residents are questioning the planned bypass. A plan to end jams on two-lane Route 45 between Grass Lake and Millburn roads includes a bypass west of Route 45. The selected route slices through the McDonald Woods Forest Preserve and the Forest Trail subdivision and skirts the Heritage Trails subdivision on the west side of Route 45. It also calls for the realignment of Grass Lake and Millburn roads. Full story.

Avoid Crystal Lake this morning as rescue workers are tending to two accidents. The first is at Crystal Lake Avenue and Route 31 where a car flipped on its side, while the second is a minor crash at Route 31 and Terra Cotta Avenue. People should also avoid Arlington Heights Road at Lake-Cook Road in Buffalo Grove and and Route 59 at Bonner Road because construction. Traffic is reduced to one lane in those areas. <h3 class="briefHead">Rangers beat Cardinals to lead series 3-2</h3>

The Texas Rangers are one game away from the World Series title after a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals last night. Mike Napoli smashed a tiebreaking two-run double with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to lead his team to a 3-2 World Series lead heading back to Texas. Albert Pujols came to bat in the ninth inning with one man on, but struck out. Game six is scheduled for Wednesday. Full story.
