White Sox claim Cleveland outfielder Jerry Sands

In the market for some outfield depth since trading Trayce Thompson, the White Sox claimed outfield Jerry Sands off waivers, team officials announced Wednesday.

The Sox picked up Sands, 29, from the Cleveland Indians and he will likely compete for a reserve spot in the outfield along with Scott Hairston, who signed a minor league deal with the Sox last month.

Sands, who hits right and throws right, is a career .238 hitter in parts of four seasons with the Indians, Rays and Dodgers. He is particularly effective against left-handed pitchers and he has posted a .506 slugging percentage against them.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound outfielder hit .236 with 4 home runs, 19 RBI and 11 runs scored in 50 games with Cleveland in 2015.
