Glen Ellyn is reviving antiques sale

Move over, “Antiques Roadshow.”

The Glen Ellyn Historical Society is reviving a tradition of its own with Antiques on the Green from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 26, on the grounds of Stacy’s Tavern Museum at Stacy’s Corners, 800 N. Main St., Glen Ellyn.

“I think this event is going to be a lot of fun,” said historical society member Lee Marks, who with his wife Judy, is running the show.

Professional antique dealers themselves, the Marks couple ran the Country Folk Art Festival at the Kane County Fairgrounds for 28 years. While country folk art is reproductions of antiques, they will bring in 22 real antique dealers to sell their wares at the Glen Ellyn show.

“The dealers are coming from all over Illinois. Some are Wisconsin dealers,” Marks said. “They’re all professional dealers with very fine antiques.”

Fine antiques doesn’t have to mean costly, Marks said. The antiques will include furniture, textiles, pottery and decorative accessories.

“There will be availability in all price ranges,” he said.

Marks, chairman of the Glen Ellyn Historical Preservation Commission and a past president of the historical society, said the historical society had held an antique show for several years in the late 1970s and early 1980s that was discontinued for lack of volunteers.

But with the historical society in need of funding, the decision was made to revive the show.

“All the monies are going to be donated to the Glen Ellyn Historical Society,” Marks said.

The funds will be used to benefit Stacy’s Tavern Museum, an 1846 traveler’s inn and stagecoach stop that is on the National Register of Historic Places, and to continue development of the Glen Ellyn History Park.

The $5 admission charge includes a tour of Stacy’s Tavern Museum, as well as discounts in the Stacy’s Corners Museum Store and in local restaurants. The historical society also will hold one of its ever-popular bake sales.

“It’s a good deal for customers,” Marks said.

Dealers will be set up inside the history center. as well as outdoors.

“It’s being held rain or shine,” Marks said.
