Police continue search for elderly man
More than 48 hours after being reported missing, police still have no leads on a 73-year-old man in a wheelchair who was last seen in Rolling Meadows Wednesday afternoon.
Robert J. Smith was in the suburbs from out-of-state to visit his brother, a resident at Plum Creek Supportive Living Facility, 2801 Algonquin Road, and was last seen leaving the facility in a wheelchair.
The wheelchair equipped with an oxygen tank, but police say Smith can walk and get around on his own.
Rolling Meadows Sgt. Tom Gadomski said Smith had no identification, funds or means of communication, but that he might have been trying to visit an acquaintance in Chicago.
Police don't know if Smith made it to the city or who he might have trying to visit, but said he does not drive or have access to a vehicle.
Smith's brother made the police report with help from the supportive care facility, police said.
Smith is described as a white male approximately 6'0" to 6'2" tall, weighing 200 to 245 lbs. with gray hair, brown eyes, and a pockmarked face. Smith was not wearing his glasses when he was last seen.
Gadomski said police have scanned the area, put out bulletins to other Illinois law enforcement agencies and been in touch with the Chicago Police Department.
He said they have also checked area hospitals and taxi companies, but have no leads.
"We think he got a ride somewhere but we're still trying to piece it all together," he said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Rolling Meadows Police Department at (847) 255-2416.
