Arkansas hires Hargreaves as linebackers coach

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas has hired former Houston assistant Vernon Hargreaves as linebackers coach.

Hargreaves helped win a national championship as an assistant with Miami in 2002. He replaces Randy Shannon, who was hired at Florida earlier this month.

Razorbacks coach Bret Bielema said keeping a strong recruiting presence in Florida was a priority following Shannon's departure, and that the hiring of Hargreaves fits with that. Before stops with the Cougars, South Florida and East Carolina, Hargreaves was linebackers coach with the Hurricanes from 1998-2005.

Hargreaves will make $275,000 annually. He joins an Arkansas defense that improved from 76th nationally in 2013 to 10th this season under first-year defensive coordinator Robb Smith.

The Razorbacks were 7-6 this season with a win over Texas in the Texas Bowl, improving from 3-9 in Bielema's first season.
