Police believe suspect shot himself during chase

Police in a Matteson say a suspected bank robber appears to have shot himself in the head during a high-speed chase.

A news release from the Matteson Police Department says an officer pursuing the suspect saw him place what appeared to be a handgun to the side of his head.

Glass blew out of the driver's side window and the vehicle overturned, striking a utility pole and a fence. The man was pronounced dead at the scene with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police did not release his name.

The chase began after a man robbed a BMO Harris bank in Matteson late Friday morning.
