Martin, Cougars slam Chiefs

Trey Martin's first homer of the season - a grand slam in the seventh inning - lifted the Kane County Cougars to a 5-4 victory and a series sweep of the Peoria Chiefs in Midwest League action Tuesday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva.

The first-place Cougars (35-17) trailed 2-1 in the seventh when Jordan Hankins doubled to put runners at second and third. After a pickoff, David Bote walked and Shawon Dunston Jr. reached on an infield hit to load the bases. Martin pulled a 2-2 pitch over the left-field wall to give the Cougars a 5-2 lead.

Reliever Michael Wagner (1-1) earned the win, allowing a run on 4 hits in 1⅓ innings, and Tyler Bremer picked up his third save.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the first inning when Ben Carhart drove home Jake Hannemann with a single.

The Cougars begin a six-game road trip today at 6:30 p.m. in Clinton, Iowa, when they send Paul Blackburn (5-1, 2.37 ERA) against Carlos Misell (5-3, 3.74).
