Antioch Neighborhood Watch celebrates 5 years
On Thursday, Oct. 15. the Antioch Neighborhood Watch hosted a "Meet and Greet" for new Police Chief Steven Huffman. Originally formed in the fall 2010 by Mayor Larry Hanson and former Police Chief Craig Somerville, Neighborhood Watch also celebrated the five-year anniversary of the implementation of the program in Antioch.
From 2011-14, Antioch experienced a consistent reduction in crime. By way of example, curfew violations decreased from 40 arrests in 2011 to just 15 arrests in 2014. There were 92 burglary to motor vehicle complaints in 2011, compared to 30 in 2014. Neighborhood Watch is considered to have contributed to this decrease in crime, and serves as an example of the benefits of fostering a cooperative relationship between law enforcement and the citizens of Antioch.
The Neighborhood Watch program consists of over 200 members, representing several different neighborhoods within the village of Antioch. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Antioch Police Department at 433 Orchard St. The meetings focus on a wide range of community concerns and crime prevention issues, and all residents are welcome to attend.
