Hammond police testing body cameras, may wear by summer

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) - The police chief in Hammond says his officers are testing body cameras.

Hammond Police Chief John Doughty tells The (Munster) Times (http://bit.ly/16gJ0fO ) that patrol officers could start wearing the cameras this summer. Doughty says the department wants to buy between 125 and 150 body cameras at a cost of about $80,000. Right now police officers are testing cameras from four different companies.

Officers will wear the cameras if they're on regular patrol or in traffic or gang or other units.
