Belleville school employee charged with striking student
BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A teachers aide is accused of hitting a 10-year-old student in the face at a Belleville elementary school.
Sixty-four-year-old Shelia L. Scheffer of Sauget was charged Tuesday with felony aggravated battery in a public place. She's accused of striking the male student in the face with her hand at Douglas Elementary School.
The Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/1MbEfoR ) reports Scheffer wasn't in police custody as of Tuesday afternoon and couldn't be reached for comment. Detective Mark Heffernan of the Belleville Police Department tells the newspaper a warrant has been issued for Scheffer's arrest and the department is working with her attorney to arrange her surrender.
Superintendent Matt Klosterman says the district conducted its own internal investigation into the incident. He says Scheffer has resigned from her position.
