Libertyville scratches out a couple of Florida wins
The claws came out in a doubleheader sweep for Libertyville's softball team in Orlando, Fla., Tuesday.
Libertyville pounded Umatlilla (Fla.) 17-5 and 10-0 to improve to 5-0 on the season. The Wildcats conclude play in Florida today.
Hannah Heraty was the winning pitcher in both games, throwing 4 innings and allowing 4 hits, while striking out four and walking none, in Game 1. Libertyville received 2 hits apiece from Heraty (3 RBI), Jessie Lauret (RBI), Sam Hilldale, Michaela Mooney and Kenzie Rother (double, 3 RBI).
"(We had) contributions up and down the lineup," coach Elissa Wisniewski said. "Solid hitting and baserunning helped over come shaky defense."
Heraty (5-0) pitched 6 innings in Game 2, allowing 2 hits, striking out four and not walking a batter.
Heraty also had a big game at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a triple. Mooney was 2-for-2 with 2 RBI.
Palatine 5, Wauconda 4: Kayla Wedl struck out 16 batters and allowed only 1 hit through five innings, before the host Pirates plated 3 runs in the sixth to even the score at 4-4.
Palatine then scored the winning run in the seventh.
Wauconda (2-4) got 2-for-4 efforts from Taylor McCarthy (triple) and Brooke Sefcik (home run). Wedl and Mallory Carver both doubled.
Round Lake 6, Proviso West 0: Starting pitcher Ashley Wegner and Hayley Steinberg combined on a 6-hit shutout for the Panthers in their nonconference win.
Wegner struck out 9 batters in 5 innings, scattering 4 hits and walking one. Steinberg allowed 2 hits and struck out three in her 2 innings. Kylie Bart and Wegner (RBI) were both 2-for-3. Steinberg was 1-for-4 with 2 RBI.
