Fans clash with police ahead of Ajax-Fenerbahce match

AMSTERDAM (AP) - Rival football fans have thrown tables and chairs at one another and clashed with riot police in central Amsterdam ahead of a Europa League match between Ajax and Fenerbahce.

Police spokesman Frans Zuiderhoek says officers intervened after fans began throwing the furniture from bar terraces on Thursday in Amsterdam's Dam Square. Zuiderhoek says two people were detained on suspicion of public violence.

He added that police were able to restore order in the square which is popular with tourists and shoppers.
