DuPage symphony concert to benefit Humane Society

The DuPage Symphony Orchestra will dedicate an outdoor concert to helping care for stray cats and dogs.

The orchestra will present its "Made in America" concert in partnership with the Naperville Area Humane Society at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 23, at Naperville's Community Concert Center in Central Park, 104 E. Benton Ave. Bring a lawn chair or blanket, or get there early enough to enjoy the new movable benches. Admission is free.

Humane Society volunteers with four-legged friends will be on-hand to accept donations of items on the organization's wish list. Visit napervillehumanesociety.org for the society's updated needs.

The DuPage Symphony Orchestra was honored by the Illinois Council of Orchestras as the 2013 Community Orchestra of the Year. Founded in 1954, the DSO is composed of almost 100 musicians, most of whom work outside the music industry during the day as engineers, physicians, attorneys, educators, physicists, marketing professionals, project managers, and even a DuPage County judge. The organization is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit with an all-volunteer musician base. Members travel from towns throughout DuPage County and even beyond its limits for the quality of music and level of performance offered by the orchestra.

Cited for "her consistently high artistic standards, her energetic podium style, and her innovative programming," Music Director Barbara Schubert was honored by the Illinois Council of Orchestras as the 2003 Conductor of the Year.

Appointed at the beginning of the 1986-87 season as only the second music director in the DSO's history, Schubert also serves as the music director and conductor of the University of Chicago Symphony Orchestra and New Music Ensemble and the Park Ridge Fine Arts Symphony.

With a performed repertoire of more than 2,000 works, she brings a wealth of musical knowledge and experience to the podium and continues to lead the orchestra with energy, artistry and imagination.

The DSO presents its 2015-16 season of five subscription programs, family concerts for Halloween and the winter holidays at Wentz Concert Hall in Naperville, and a series of intimate chamber music concerts in Wheaton and Lombard.

An emphasis on educational and outreach programs such as Brownies with Barbara open dress rehearsals, Chamber Music at the Naperville 95th Street Library, Tiny Great Performances at the DuPage Children's Museum, and the Young Artist Audition for talented high school students allows the orchestra to fulfill its mission of "Surrounding Our Community with Music."
