White Sox rally to knock off Oakland, 2-1

There was finally some good news for the White Sox Wednesday night, on two fronts.

First, the Sox rallied back in the eighth inning and beat the A's 2-1 at U.S. Cellular Field.

Avisail Garcia came through with the clutch hit, a 2-run single off Oakland reliever Luke Gregorson with the bases loaded and two outs.

Second, the White Sox got a solid effort from Chris Bassitt.

In his second major-league start, the 25-year-old starting pitcher showed he might contend for a rotation spot next year.

Bassitt pitched 6 innings and allowed 1 run on 5 hits and 2 walks. Oakland's Jeff Samardzija was even better. The ex-Cubs starter pitched 7 shutout innings and allowed 6 hits.

Bassitt made his first start for the Sox on Aug. 30 against the Tigers and took the loss after giving up 5 runs on 7 hits and 4 walks in 6.1 innings.

"For him, it's throwing strikes and being able to stay consistent and have some off-speed pitches that get in there," manager Robin Ventura said of Bassitt before the game. "He has velocity and stuff like that, but there is more to it than throwing as hard as you can. For him it's going to be the control he has with all of his pitches."
