January's Coffee Talk looks at growers

A Coffee Talk, "Coffee Growers and the Coffee Trade," will be from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at the Des Plaines History Center, 781 Pearson St.

The program will be presented by historian Carmen Kordick, who has researched growing and distributing coffee in early 20th-century Latin America. For her dissertation, she studied the coffee trade in rural Costa Rica, which is one of the world's most important coffee-growing regions.

Because Kordick speaks more than one language, the History Center has decided to offer this Coffee Talk in English and Spanish.

"We are happy to be able to bring this program to area residents who are more comfortable learning in Spanish," said Philip Mohr, History Center curator. "Not all of our speakers are multilingual, so we jumped at the chance to have this general-interest presentation in two languages."

The Spanish session will be offered 7-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood St.
