White Sox storm back to top Tigers in 11

The White Sox had the worst offense in the American League over the first two months of the season.

The Sox headed into Friday night's game against the Tigers ranked last in the league in runs scored (191), home runs (35) and OPS (on-base plus slugging), with a .651 percentage.

Manager Robin Ventura did drop the slumping Melky Cabrera from No. 2 to No. 6 while moving Alexei Ramirez up in the lineup, but that could be the extent of change for the time being.

"We were hoping that click would have happened by now," general manager Rick Hahn said before White Sox rallied to beat Detroit 4-3 in 11 innings at U.S. Cellular Field.

Down to their final out in the ninth inning, Adam LaRoche hit a solo home run off Tigers closer Joakim Soria to tie the game at 3.

In the 11th, Adam Eaton led off with a single and went to third on Alexei Ramirez's single. After reliever Alex Wilson intentionally walked Jose Abreu, Avisail Garcia was hit by a pitch to force home Eaton.

As for the Sox' offense, Hahn sees better days ahead.

"The fact is you're talking, in a lot of instances, about guys with some upside or some track record and some upside," the White Sox' GM said. "Guys like Alexei, who was a Silver Slugger last year. Or Melky, who's obviously been a professional hitter throughout his career.

"Abreu has shown us more from time to time. So for the most part, veteran guys have track records and you expect them to perform at their traditional levels in the not-to-distant future."

Facing an unproven starter in Detroit left-hander Kyle Ryan in the opener of a three-game series, the Sox got an RBI double in the second inning from Abreu and a Garcia solo home run in the seventh.

Jose Quintana pitched 7 innings for the White Sox and allowed 3 runs on 9 hits.
