Boys golf: Barrington runs away with sectional title

A couple of weeks ago, after the Barrington boys golf team won the Mid-Suburban League championship, Broncos senior Brock Dickson talked about the upcoming state playoffs.

"This year," said Dickson, "we're going to give it our best and try to win it all."

Barrington got one step closer to its goal Monday at Buffalo Grove Golf Club, winning the Class 3A BG sectional tourney in a runaway.

The Broncos got two scores under par and two even-par scores at Buffalo Grove, posting an impressive 4- under mark of 284 to win the tournament by a whopping 15 strokes over runner-up Lake Forest (299).

Both Barrington and the Scouts will now advance to the state finals, to be held this Friday and Saturday at The Den at Fox Creek golf course in Bloomington.

Senior Dylan Dunne and freshman Drew Schauenberg of the Broncos carded the top individual scores of the day, as each shot a 2-under 70.

Schauenberg won medalist honors in a playoff.

"This means a lot," said Dunne of the Broncos' outstanding performance. "We knew it would be tough here, so we wanted to come out and have everyone play well. We knew what we could do, and this is one of our best days of the season so far."

Prospect carded a score of 303 to earn the third team qualification to Bloomington, and the Knights were led by Luke Kruger, who fired the only other under-par round of the day, a 71.

Buffalo Grove finished fourth at 309, while Stevenson (315) finished fifth.

Ten individuals not part of advancing teams also move on to The Den, and senior Jake Michalak of Lake Zurich led the way with a 72.

Chad Tramba of Hersey shot 73 to qualify, as did Pablo Castro from Palatine, and Jason Seaholm from Jacobs qualified with a 74.

"It's nice to be getting back to normalcy," said Seaholm, referring to the complete state series that will be put on this year. "We (as a team) struggled for a while to get in to rhythm this season, but everybody came back in good spirits.

"I started today two-over through two, but then I birdied two holes coming in (to the turn) for an even 36, then kept it going."

Dori Lee of Buffalo Grove will be making the trip to Bloomington after firing a 75. Lee bogeyed 4 of his first 5 holes, but played the rest of the way under par.

"Dori is headed to Loyola (in the fall)," said BG coach Pete Duffer, "and he played great after a slow start. He's a leader and a highly skilled, competitive athlete."

The meet went off as planned with no interruptions despite the possibility of inclement weather, as dark skies threatened to delay the tourney all day.

"The Buffalo Grove Golf Club staff of Joe Bridges (head pro) and Branden Matchen, the course superintendent and a BG golf alum, were the reason that today's event had the success that it did," added Duffer.

Maddux Tarasievich of Cary-Grove earned individual qualification with a 74, as did Matthew Kisselburg of Mundelein (76) and Ryan Beerheide of BG (76).

On the team side, Daniel Raupp (77), Michael Madayag (77), Patrick Raupp (78) and Will Salzmann (78) all contributed to Prospect's advancement.

Owen Naughten and William Lange each shot even-par 72's to give clutch assists to Barrington's big win.

"The kids started strong and were able to remain consistent all day," said Broncos coach Bryan Tucker. "They overcame any adversity they faced, and that says a lot about their character and what they've done as a group. They showed up today under the bright lights and didn't give in to the pressure."

Stevenson senior Maadhav Muralidharan excelled with a 76, but was the tough-luck odd man out after a playoff among four players with the same score.

"I was holding it together on the front nine, and I was playing well on the back nine as well," said Muralidharan. "It's just unfortunate that in the last two or three holes I came apart, but that's golf. You're going to have those moments."

Class 3A at Lyons:

Conant's Nicolas Simon was the lone area qualifier from the LT sectional. He shot a 71.

Class 2A at Sycamore:

Grayslake North junior Crteighton Campbell (76), Antioch junior Donald Barnett (77), Vernon Hills senior Dylan Josephson (77) and Grayslake Central sophomore Dominic Lucchesi (78) were among the individual qualifiers for the Class 2A state final meet this weekend at Weibring Golf Club in Normal.

Class 2A at Brother Rice:

St. Viator missed qualifying for state as a team by 5 shots but the Lions will be sending Charlie Bullock, David Koziol and Ryan Kalaway to Normal after all three shot 77s to qualify.
