Decatur now home to beam from 9/11 attack on New York

DECATUR, Ill. (AP) - The city of Decatur now has a steel beam salvaged from the World Trade Center wreckage after the 9/11 attacks.

Firefighters from about 20 central Illinois departments and police officers from several agencies held a motorcade for the I-beam on Saturday afternoon.

The (Decatur) Herald and Review reports (http://bit.ly/1R6vUUA ) that the 13-foot-long, 1,500-pound beam will be used as the centerpiece of a monument in the city. The beam was driven to Decatur from New York on a flatbed trailer with state police escorts along much of the six-state route. It will be kept at Decatur's airport until the monument is designed.

Organizers say they need to raise $55,000 to build the monument and set up a maintenance fund.
