Cubs place Soler on DL; Bryant receives May honors

The Cubs on Wednesday placed outfielder Jorge Soler in the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained left ankle. The 23-year-old Soler suffered the injury in Monday night's game against the Marlins in Miami. He did not play Tuesday.

To fill Soler's roster spot, the Cubs recalled outfielder-infielder Mike Baxter from Class AAA Iowa. Baxter recently had been sent to Iowa after spending a brief time with the big club.

In 49 games, Soler has a batting line of .265/.322/.402 with 4 homers and 19 RBI.

In other news, Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant was named the National League rookie of the month for May. The 23-year-old Bryant led the major leagues with 22 RBI last month. He was 27-for-102 (.265) with a .369 on-base percentage and a .510 slugging percentage. He hit 7 home runs.

The Cubs named catcher Kyle Schwarber and right-handed pitcher Ryan Williams their minor-league player and pitcher of the month for May, respectively. Schwarber, 22, batted .297 with 8 homers in the month for Class AA Tennessee. Williams was 2-1 with a 1.59 ERA in 5 starts for Class A South Bend.
