Give police officers respect they deserve

In the many years that I worked in high schools, we had a police officer who was assigned as a consultant to each of our five schools. For 11 years, I was in charge of the officer in my school. When I interviewed officers for that position, I always looked for someone who could wear several different hats - counselor, adviser, instructor, friend-in-need, protector and enforcer.

These officers were some of the best in their profession. They were always there to assist whenever needed. As I worked with them, my respect for the job they did grew leaps and bounds. I will always be grateful for our police.

It hurts me deeply to see all police officers being treated poorly because of the few who have brought shame to the profession. Over the years we have seen that there are scoundrels in any profession. To treat all in that profession with contempt is pathetic.

I tip my hat to all of the officers who I have come to know or work with in Hoffman Estates, Palatine and Inverness. I also know police officers on the Mount Prospect police force and some current and retired Chicago officers. They and all dedicated police officers everywhere are in our prayers.

In this holiday season, how about taking some time to thank all of the hardworking, dedicated officers and retired officers letting them know how much they are appreciated? They are deserving of some recognition.
