Jury convicts former Chicago man on 1 count in Zimbabwe case

A jury convicted a one-time Chicago resident on one count of lobbying U.S. lawmakers to lift sanctions against Zimbabwe's leaders. Jurors acquitted C. Gregory Turner on two others.

Jurors in the federal case in Chicago convicted Turner on Friday of violating sanctions against Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and his inner circle. That count carries a maximum 20-year prison term.

The jury acquitted the 72-year-old on two counts of failing to register as a foreign agent.

Outside court, Turner's lawyers described the acquittals as a partial victory. Prosecutors didn't comment.

Former U.S. Sen. Roland Burris was on the government's list of potential witnesses. But prosecutors never called him.

Turner now makes his home in Israel. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 9.
