Funeral held for slain 2-year-old in South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Mourners gathered for the funeral of a 2-year-old South Bend boy fatally shot while playing outside as police continued looking for those responsible for the gunfire.

The funeral for John Swoveland Jr. was held Sunday at a South Bend funeral home.

The Rev. Greg Brown tells WNDU-TV and WSBT-TV it was an emotional service with many children on hand. He says a mourner brought an Easter Bunny and placed it next to John's body.

Investigators say the fatal shot possibly was a stray bullet from a gunfight Wednesday evening between two rival groups about a block away. No arrests have been made.

Police Chief Ronald Teachman tells WSJV-TV he hopes the shooting encourages the public to become more involved in fighting crime.
