Radon test kits available from Lake County Health Department

The Lake County Health Department is offering radon testing kits for $10 at its office, 500 W. Winchester Road, Libertyville, or $13 by mail.

The cost includes return postage, laboratory analysis and interpretation. Test kits also are available from area hardware and building supply stores.

Radon is a radioactive gas naturally found in rock and soil. It is a leading cause of lung cancer and can't be seen, tasted, or smelled. It builds up in homes over time. It is estimated that 1 in 15 homes has high levels of radon, according to the health department.
