Chicago man sentenced to prison for Barrington thefts

A 27-year-old Chicago man was sentenced to one year in prison and ordered to pay $654 in fines after he pleaded guilty to taking items, including a GPS device, from unlocked cars parked on a Barrington street.

Darvis Dennis pleaded guilty last week to theft, a class 4 felony punishable by up to three years in prison.

Prosecutors say several people witnessed the thefts, which took place May 6, 2014, along the 100 block of Palm Street in Barrington. Some time later, the witnesses were detained by Northbrook police and told them about the Barrington thefts, prosecutors said.

Barrington police subsequently linked Dennis to the thefts by the serial number of the GPS device, which Dennis pawned at a Chicago pawnshop. authorities said.

Dennis received credit for 93 days in custody. He must complete at least 50 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for release.
