Northwest suburbs mark National Night Out
Tuesday was the National Night Out, a series of community-sponsored, family-friendly outings that primarily promote good relationships between residents and police.
In many communities, however, it's more than that, featuring music, food and all kinds of agencies, law enforcement and otherwise, represented that residents can connect with.
National Night Out started several decades ago as Take Back the Night, a series of anti-crime demonstrations, mostly in urban areas. National Night Out has some of those same elements - learning to protect yourself from criminals, bringing neighbors together, and becoming acquainted with emergency first responders - but has morphed into more family friendly picnics and demonstrations.
