34-year-old man dies after being shot by Indianapolis police
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old city man Thursday by two officers who say they shot him after he pointed a gun at them.
Jason Bryant was pronounced dead at Eskenazi Hospital several hours after being shot inside his home. Police say he pointed a .380 caliber handgun at officers when they entered the bedroom in his home. Police say Bryant did not fire any shots.
City police Lt. Richard Riddle said police tried to stop Bryant in a pickup truck he was driving about 1:40 a.m. Thursday. Riddle said he fled and officers followed until the truck stopped and the man ran into a house on the city's southwest side.
Police determined the truck had been stolen from Whiteland, about 25 miles south of Indianapolis, on Nov. 23, Riddle said. Officers surrounded the house until they obtained a search warrant, Riddle said. Police entered the house about 5:30 a.m.
They entered the home and were immediately confronted by a man with a gun, Riddle said. "Shots were fired inside that residence," he said.
Police say Bryant was out on bond after being charged with dealing and possession of methamphetamine over 10 grams and being a serious violent felon in possession of a handgun.
Police say a sergeant who has been with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department for 28 years and a patrol officer with the department for 12 years were involved in the shooting. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard for officer-involved shootings.
