Three honored for contributions to Hispanic community

On Tuesday, May 6, Centro de Información will be celebrating its annual Community Day Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. at the Elgin Country Club, off Weld Road in Elgin.

Three people will be honored for their contributions to Centro de Información and the Hispanic community. They are: Eira Corral, Hanover Park village clerk; Linda Siete, manager of the bi-weekly newspaper Reflejos; and Rick Floyd, former CEO of Advocate Sherman Hospital and new CEO of Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.

The speaker for the event will be Martin Castro, CEO and president of Castro Synergies, LLC.

Castro is the son of Mexican immigrants and the first in his family to graduate from high school. He went on to DePaul University and ultimately received his law degree from the University of Michigan. He currently serves as the chairman of the United States Commission on Civil Rights as well as the Illinois Human Rights Commission. He also serves on the board of directors of The Chicago Community Trust and is active in a number of other organizations and causes. The constant thread running throughout his career has been his personal commitment to community service.

Centro de Información is a social service agency that has been serving the community for 42 years with offices in Elgin, Carpentersville and Hanover Park.

The agency helps more than 15,000 predominantly low-income Hispanic immigrants each year by providing individual and family counseling, bilingual advocacy, information and referral, immigration and naturalization services, parenting skills training, community education and youth programs.

Centro serves the Hispanic community residing in the greater Fox Valley area: Kane, McHenry, DuPage and Cook counties. In addition, many clients who seek their services travel from as far as Lake and Will counties as well as nearby states.
