Engine maker Cummins plans 2,000 job cuts worldwide

COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) - Engine maker Cummins Inc. says it plans to cut 2,000 salaried jobs worldwide in the coming months following a slump in global sales revenue.

The job reductions amount to about 4 percent of the Columbus, Indiana-based company's nearly 55,000 workers around the world.

Cummins CEO Tom Linebarger said Tuesday that the company projects making about 500 job cuts within its Indiana operations.

Cummins has about 8,000 employees at its facilities in Columbus, Seymour and other Indiana communities. No manufacturing job cuts were announced.

Cummins says its third quarter revenue was down 6 percent from the same period last year, with international revenues falling 18 percent.

Linebarger says the company is moving ahead with a planned $30 million office tower in downtown Indianapolis for its global distribution business headquarters.
