Seed company wants to expand, add 30 jobs in Effingham

EFFINGHAM, Ill. (AP) - Representatives from a seed company say they're looking at adding an Effingham facility.

Jim Zimmer is with Beck's Hybrids Distribution and Research. The Effingham Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/1tOwDTC ) he told city council members Tuesday that the company is interested in Effingham.

The business would be located on 90 acres that the city owns in Effingham Business Park. It would have up to 30 new employees. The company already has four similar distribution centers and farm research centers in states around Illinois.

Beck's sells corn, soybean and other seeds to farmers. But in Effingham it also wants to grow crops with new seed technology. Zimmer says if all goes well, crops could be growing in the spring.

Effingham officials say they plan to apply for grant money to assist the project.
