Muncie names canal Liberty Pass, will open later this month
MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - Muncie has named the city's new downtown canal.
The (Muncie) Star Press reports (http://tspne.ws/1OobPLr ) that there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication for the Liberty Pass later this month at Washington and Liberty streets.
The block-long canal is decorative but it's also part of a $10 million Muncie Sanitary District project to move storm water.
District administrator Nikki Grigsby says the name was inspired by nearby Liberty Street and the canal "passing" stormwater to the White River.
The canal also is part of a city proposal to overhaul surrounding riverfront via public and private development. The city is seeking state funding for the $48 million project.
