Nonprofit plans $1.3M fundraising campaign for youth hockey
DETROIT (AP) - A nonprofit is planning a $1.3 million fundraising campaign as part of its efforts to promote the growth of youth hockey in the Detroit area.
The East Side Hockey Foundation acquired the Grosse Pointe Community Rink on Detroit's east side, renaming it East Side Hockey Foundation Ice Arena. A Feb. 7 ribbon-cutting is planned to unveil a new meeting room and pro shop as well as to discuss the capital campaign.
Plans call for using part of the money raised to renovate the rink starting in June.
Brian Francis, president of the foundation's board, says hockey can help provide important life skills. He says the foundation is working to make hockey accessible and affordable for all children by providing equipment and subsidizing the cost of ice time.
